Get social with us

Thank you for taking the time to meet us and share our journey. I have worked in the recruitment industry for over 25 years, so I guess you can say I have seen it all. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Although I will say, the last few months, I am not sure I can say that anymore. Middle of March seems like forever ago, but it’s when this nightmare started for us. The world turned upside down, overnight we saw job losses, businesses shuttering and working from home executed. During April and May, the number of job ads across white collar roles dropped by over 60%. We still experienced some demand across accounting support, the payroll person became the hero; IT to create efficiencies and fill in the gaps for lost people and HR to navigate the new employment landscape. Where does that leave us now? With the recent surge in cases particular to the suburbs we live and work in, the sentiment appears to be anger and disappointment. We all saw light at the end of the tunnel, a slow re-opening, and a chance at returning to some sort of normalcy. But for us in Melbourne, it’s not to be right now. We continue to work from home where possible, some of us are home schooling and we are restricted in our movements and now must don a face mask. We still hold an optimistic view this will suppress the virus, go Melbourne!

Here are my top three tips to get through the months ahead.

1. Worry about what you can control

So much of what is happening now is out of our control. We can’t predict what’s ahead, we don’t know what the future holds. All we can do is worry about what we can control. Staying at home to be safe, budgeting and following the medical advice; if you have lost your job, being flexible about what work you will search for. There are still jobs on offer, they just might look a little different. Look after your mental and physical health by staying connected (virtually of course), getting regular exercise and eating healthy.

2. Work hard if you are lucky enough to still have employment

Many of us are still lucky enough to have a job. Many of us are working from home. Continue to work hard, continue to perform, and achieve results. While it’s hard if you are also home schooling, schedule important tasks while children are otherwise occupied (no such thing right now as too much screen time). Keep connected to your employer as it’s a two-way relationship where it’s important you go the extra mile. It’s not the time to quibble about hours or overtime or management shortcomings. Do your bit and step up, now is your time to shine.

3. Embrace change

Things are unlikely to return to the way they were before. This is the new normal? Until there is a vaccine, we must learn to adapt and be resilient, and come up with new ways of doing things. Whatever you thought about the past, this may not be relevant for the future. Open your mind to new beginning and new ways of doing things. Evolution is a critical part of life and we must embrace it. Those that do will reap the rewards in the future, whatever that looks like.

I thank you for being part of our community, I value loyalty, transparency and honesty and I hope we continue to grow and evolve and solve all your recruitment challenges. I hope you enjoy this series and always happy to hear of your ideas to help our business improve our service to you.
